Choosing the Right Mulch For Your Garden Or Landscaping Project
Choosing the Right Mulch For Your Garden Or Landscaping Project
Mulching is one of the most cost effective and easiest methods to transform a garden into a beautiful water-wise landscape. Carlsbad mulch protects the soil, moderates its temperature, reduces evaporation of moisture and suppresses weed growth. The right mulching technique, combined with an appropriate irrigation system, can significantly cut down on the use of toxic herbicides.
Mulch is available in a wide variety of organic and inorganic forms and materials, including bark, wood chips, shredded tree bark, straw, grass clippings, paper and compost. Organic mulches add nutrients to the soil and help with aeration, while inorganic options provide weed control, water conservation, erosion control and aesthetic fill, color and texture.
The type of mulch you choose depends largely on your aesthetic preferences and the design of your garden or landscaping. The color, texture and consistency of the mulch also determines how well it integrates with your overall landscaping. Some of the most popular mulches include a natural wood-colored bark, dark shredded bark, and wood chips.
Cedar mulch provides a rich, earthy reddish color and smells wonderful while retaining its shape and retarding weed growth. Shredded redwood mulch is another good choice as it adds a rich color and the aroma of cedar while reducing weed growth. A natural, organic, pine needle mulch is also available. It’s often referred to as gorilla hair and is decorative, fibrous and stays put, retarding weed growth and retaining soil moisture.
Gravel mulch is an appropriate ground cover for California natives and other dry, sunny planting areas. It’s also a great option for sloped sites where erosion control is important. However, using gravel mulch in large areas and in a single size tends to look ‘industrial’ and potentially unattractive. Mixing sizes and working with the types of rocks and gravel that naturally occur in your area usually creates a more appealing project.
Organic mulches generally provide the best weed control and help promote healthy, vibrant plants. They break down over time, adding organic matter to the soil. Inorganic mulches are typically used for erosion control, site stabilization and water conservation in situations where plant or turf establishment isn’t the primary objective.
A good rule of thumb is to apply a 2-3 inch layer of mulch to your planted areas. Ideally, the mulch should extend out several feet beyond the base of the plant to ensure a good barrier is established.
Mulch is available in bulk, measured in cubic yards, for projects that require a significant amount of material. Alternatively, it can be bought in bags for smaller jobs, such as home gardens. The bagged mulch is usually heavier and has a more consistent color, as the material is kept in a sealed container throughout shipping and handling. This makes it a good option for the homeowner who doesn’t have a dump truck or trailer for hauling the mulch. It’s also more convenient for small landscaping jobs, such as planting beds around a home or garden.
