Understanding 9/11 Cancers and Illnesses: Legal Rights for Survivors
Helping 9/11 victims is more than just work—it’s a calling. A dedicated 9/11 attorney and other legal professionals in this field are deeply committed to the clients they serve.
The Zadroga Act established the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund (9/11 VCF) and the World Trade Center Health Program (WTCHP). These programs have helped countless victims receive significant compensation. Register today to meet the 9/11 VCF deadline for financial support and lifetime medical care.
Respiratory Illnesses
People living and working near the World Trade Center after September 11, 2001, may have developed respiratory illnesses such as chronic bronchitis, COPD, and asthma as a result of breathing in toxic dust. Some have also suffered from cancers, including lung, esophageal, stomach, and colon cancer.
Medical studies have shown that those who inhaled toxins from the 9/11 dust cloud experienced both immediate and long-term decreases in lung function. As a result, many affected individuals struggle with daily activities, work, and maintaining quality of life.
If you or a loved one has developed a respiratory illness linked to the World Trade Center, you may be eligible for free lifetime medical care and monetary compensation through government-run programs. The Zadroga Act and the Victim Compensation Fund provide financial support for those suffering from related conditions.
Cancers
After the attacks and in the months that followed, thousands of first responders, office workers, residents, and students in Lower Manhattan and around Ground Zero developed serious health conditions. These included persistent respiratory issues, various cancers, and musculoskeletal disorders.
Researchers have linked many of these illnesses to exposure to the toxic dust cloud that covered Lower Manhattan for months after the attacks. Individuals present in the exposure zone may qualify for free lifetime medical care and financial compensation through federal programs.
Guidance is available to help individuals navigate enrollment, submit claims, update existing conditions, or appeal compensation decisions—making the process less stressful and more manageable.
Mesothelioma
The Zadroga Act also created a compensation system for individuals who develop illnesses linked to exposure to Ground Zero dust and debris, including mesothelioma. Compensation may cover healthcare expenses, lost income, and pain and suffering.
Mesothelioma is primarily caused by exposure to asbestos—microscopic mineral fibers that were present in the debris. Individuals exposed near the World Trade Center site may be eligible for lifetime medical care and financial compensation.
Symptoms of this rare cancer can include shortness of breath, chest pain, abdominal discomfort, weight loss, hoarseness, and difficulty swallowing. While prognosis can be serious, outcomes can vary.
Mental Health
Mental health includes emotional well-being, the ability to cope with stress, and maintaining healthy relationships. Survivors and responders exposed to toxic conditions may experience long-term psychological effects such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
Those affected may be eligible for free screening, treatment, and ongoing care through designated health programs associated with the 9/11 response.
Efforts continue to ensure that all individuals impacted by exposure to World Trade Center toxins receive the medical support and financial compensation available to them. Eligibility for these programs may be time-sensitive, so timely action is important.
